This is what should have happened, but “gamer” has been adopted as something else entirely, I think. I don’t know if the term is too far gone to be reclaimed (or if enough of a majority care enough for it to be “taken back” anyway). Completely agree with you, but just can’t see the meaning changing in a significant way. Probably more likely that what people think of as a “gamer” will change over time, though.

I wish “gamer” could describe a facet of personality like “writer” and “sister.” Why can’t it? Why not take gamer and start applying to your grandpa who plays solitaire or your friends who play Settlers of Catan? Let’s take word meaning into our own hands!
